💬 What Is Mediation, Really? Clearing Up the Myths
Despite being widely recommended in legal and workplace settings, mediation is still misunderstood—especially by those encountering it for the first time. Is it just a conversation? Is it like therapy? Is it only for legal disputes?
As a registered mediator with over two decades of experience in healthcare, housing, and community, I’m here to clear up the most common myths about mediation—and explain why it works.
❌ Myth 1: “Mediation is just a chat.”
✅ Reality: Mediation is structured, goal-oriented, and professionally facilitated.
While it may feel like a conversation, it’s guided by a trained mediator who ensures it’s safe, respectful, and productive. The process helps both parties clarify issues, express concerns, and work toward a solution—not just talk around the problem.
❌ Myth 2: “Mediation means admitting I’m wrong.”
✅ Reality: Mediation isn’t about blame—it’s about moving forward.
It’s not a legal hearing or disciplinary process. You don’t “win” or “lose.” Instead, both sides are empowered to explain their perspective, understand the other, and agree on practical steps to resolve things.
❌ Myth 3: “It only works for serious legal disputes.”
✅ Reality: Mediation is ideal for everyday conflicts too.
In fact, the earlier it’s used, the more effective it can be. Common uses include:
Workplace tension or team breakdown
Tenant-landlord disputes
Personality clashes
Miscommunication between colleagues
Neighbourhood or community issues
Early complaints resolution
Mediation can often resolve issues before they escalate into formal complaints or litigation.
❌ Myth 4: “The mediator takes sides.”
✅ Reality: A mediator is completely neutral and impartial.
They’re not a judge or advisor—they don’t make decisions or take sides. Instead, they guide the conversation and help both parties feel heard and respected, creating open space for resolution.
❌ Myth 5: “It’s too late—things have gone too far.”
✅ Reality: It’s rarely too late.
Even when emotions run high, mediation can still work. Mediaiton can be used to resolve long-standing disputes between co-workers, housing officers and tenants, and healthcare professionals—even after grievances had been filed.
What matters most is willingness to engage, even just a little.
